Hawkweed

Hieracium

I discovered the hawkweed in Sweden during the summer, near the 950-year-old pedunculate oak “Kvilleken” close to Rumskullaeken. It is also found in Germany, of course, but it only caught my attention there, where I photographed it in the shelter of the rental car.

It has jagged petals like chicory and reminds me of gift ribbons that have become tangled in the middle. However, it gets its name from its resemblance to hawk wings. “Gift ribbon flower” doesn’t sound much better, after all…
