Phlox drummondii

I discovered this alarm-red flower in my sister-in-law’s garden today. It belongs to the phlox family, which also comes in many other colors. However, it was likely the red version that once inspired Texan botanists to give it this name.

This flower is also inhabited, as I only realized after rendering the image. The aphid sits there like a guardian at the entrance to the darkness, though perhaps it was just out for a smoke.
